Anyone that thinks they need well over a million to retire is crazy. You are crazy if you think you are going to run out of money when you are 65 and have one million plus. You are already on your death bed. Enjoy the life you have left instead of working to death. My dad retired about 18 years ago at 62 with about $194,000 in his retirement account. They survived just fine. They lived conservatively, but they still took some trips and had a good life. He died a few months ago and had about $300,000 in that same account. So after taking modest draws every month for 18 years the account actually grew over time.

For the kids…. If you invest $5 into an IRA in a “good fund” from age 21-62 you would have $375,000. Bump that to $25 and you would have $700,000, roughly.
