No charges. Chanel always said Winston Churchill got her out, and nobody has ever proved it. Across France that summer roughly 20,000 women who had slept with Germans were dragged into town squares and shaved bald in front of a crowd. Coco walked. She died at that same hotel on a Sunday night in January 1971, 87 years old. Her last words to her maid: you see, this is how one dies. The room she lived in is now called the Coco Chanel Suite.
