I lost months waiting to feel like my old self before I let myself do anything. Two, the people who love you will cheer for the version of you that stays comfortable. Wanting more than comfort is going to make some of them nervous, and that tells you something worth noticing. Three, healing will take every hour you give it and still never hand you a plan. At some point you have to decide your way forward. Four, one decision made scared is worth more than a year of processing. I pitched essays before I felt like a writer and stepped on a stage before I felt like an athlete again. Five, you need women who get it, who don’t need the backstory explained and won’t hand you a sympathy card and call it a day. I figured all of this out the slow, expensive way.
