✨ Veliko Târnovo is the former capital of Bulgaria, more precisely of the Vlach-Bulgarian Tsardom between 1185-1393. Tsarevets is a medieval fortress in northern Bulgaria, right in the city of Veliko Tarnovo. 📍 Tsarevets Fortress 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, Veliko Târnovo 🏰 On the Tsarevets hill were located the important buildings for the country's administration, the royal palace complex, housing for the aristocracy, monasteries, and even at the top, the Patriarchal Church. 🏰 The fortress has three entrances, namely the main entrance, the small gate (Asen) and the Frenkhisarska gate, which was guarded by towers. The most famous is the Baldwin Tower, where the Latin emperor Baldwin of Flanders was imprisoned in 1205. 🏰 In 1393, the fortress was besieged and set on fire by the Ottoman forces, led by the son of Bayazid I, thus marking the fall of the Bulgarian Empire.
