Fun fact! Most likely, they were following or monitoring the bear. Coyotes are curious and opportunistic. They may trail a black bear because: The bear could uncover or leave behind food. The coyotes may be keeping tabs on a large animal moving through their territory. They could be mobbing/escorting it away, particularly if they have pups or a den nearby. Occasionally they’ll follow at a safe distance looking for an opportunity to scavenge.
