While diving along the reef I spotted one of the ocean’s best masters of disguise — the peacock flounder. At first it just looked like part of the sand, but then it moved. These flatfish spend most of their lives lying on the seabed, perfectly camouflaged and waiting for the right moment to strike. Their bodies can change color and pattern in seconds, blending into sand, coral, or rock so well that even experienced divers swim right past them. When prey gets too close, the flounder explodes from the sand in a lightning-fast ambush.
