Average MLB salary in 1947 was between 5-6k so he got the average his Rookie year. That is not crazy. After 5 years he was making 40k. In the end his Rookie contract was still more then he was making before signing

How much was the "Negro League" paying them... Oh right, less than 50% of what they got from the Majors? So was the Negro League under paying then too???

"Willie Mays signed for $5,000"
1963 season: Signed a record-setting contract for $100,000 (often cited up to $105,000 in subsequent peak seasons), becoming the first major league player to reach a six-figure salary.

Not to dispute his notion of pay dispute but, the Yankees signed Mantle for less than 5000 in the late 40's

@theadamnitz: So if that was true then why would a state government have to intervene to make a team sign black players? Do you really think they’re such strict white boys clubs that they’d sacrifice the bottom line and winning just because of skin color? If it was true than most of baseball at some point would’ve been black.

The complaining sometimes is on another level especially now when you athletes are the highest paid people in America. Sure you made the team with hard work but why you all still play victim. We Latinos had our property taken ranches homes land when they took California from Mexico. I don’t complain and say see all those homes in Vallejo is my great grandfather ranch that the American army took it from him.
