@rodeolifeprobs: After waking up to dozens of comments telling me what a washed up, old “Karen,” I am…here’s my thoughts. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I love the sport of rodeo and the people in it..and I’m grateful I college rodeod at a program where professional conduct was encouraged, while mistakes were forgiven (after running 3-5 miles…IYKYK.) 🤣 I think if we stop having clear, kind conversations, our next generation is in trouble. I’ve seen a massive increase in these types of videos over the past month….so apparently more of yall need to hear this than I thought.

If my rodeo coach/school or team media person asked if I wanted to post a video talking about oral sex I’d have to say no thank you. Like huh? It was weird especially coming from a programs page

this is such a culture shock for me as an albertan from a rodeo family lol people wear their vests wherever they want here, including bars, and nobody would ever judge a person for letting loose and having fun and ive def never heard of anyone losing a sponsorship over it. rodeos generally involve liquor and dances here and you're expected to have a good time and drink. the announcer asks over the big speakers if everyone is excited to get drunk and wild, if any single ladies are excited to meet the single cowboys, etc lol. is this strictness normal down there or are you from more of a bible belt state? im actually genuinely curious bc my initial impression is that it comes off as uptightness and sensitivity to me but obv theres serious cultural differences here. do you guys not have parties at rodeos or do your parties not really involve drinking or is it a "pretend you dont drink/have fun" or how is everything working down there?

It comes down to choosing between a trend with a month long life span OR your reputation/image for the rest of your career. Period. No logos at the bar still is a rule for the car lot too👏🏼

Same as any fraternity or sorority 🤷🏼‍♀️it's against their rules and bylaws. Coach would've been sick over that post and reprimands would have happened.

A good test is if you would not read those lyrics in front of your coach and your grandmother, probably should not post it.

Why aren't people seeing this through the lens of mainstream college sports? When you're recruited to play a college sport, you KNOW there are expectations from the school, your coaches, and the brands that sponsor you. People in the rodeo industry always complain about being 10-15 years behind other sports, but this is exactly why. We shouldn't be excusing this behavior when it's the same thing holding us back. If we want the payout and visibility of mainstream sports, we should probably start holding our athletes to those same standards. But people don't want to hear that. ☕️

I personally was shocked by the amount of comments saying “kids, if your coach/employer judges you for your social media, they aren’t a coach/employer you should want to be associated with.” Sometimes it’s not even about what your coach/employer thinks. We see it happen ALL the time! You offend the public with a post, the public forces your coach/employer to answer for YOUR actions and then boom. They have no choice, they have to spare the brand/team. You’re done. It’s not about whether it’s fair or not, that is the world we live in.

Media training is done for a reason! Whether it’s on the rodeo page, your personal page, or your mom‘s page even, it all is connected and can backfire. Trends are fun to watch, but our values or mission statements rarely align with trends.

Watching people twist your point is wild. You weren’t shaming anyone. You were pointing out real-world consequences. It hurts to see the dogpile, but some of us genuinely got it. Respect for risking the heat to talk about it. 👏

I was always so grateful for the lesson about this while playing growing up playing basketball. My coach did not play about social media and it’s carried me through having sponsorships now! It’s always very clear when I see someone who never had anyone to teach them that hard lesson

I personally one year posted a video to an audio that has some words in it that weren’t appropriate. I had a sponsor call me and teach me a great lesson that they are watching you. from then on I watch what words are in the audios i use!! I appreciate the sponsor reaching out and teaching a lesson instead of letting me go and i’ll cherish that. people DO watch what you post and what YOU do!!

I appreciate this message. I own a feed store and have a large sponsorship team. We’re very selective. If you want to be taken seriously, present yourself that way. Your social media is sometimes our First impression😅

all the people saying 'well I wouldn't want to work for someone who cares about this" 1st off, so short sighted. we can all say our thoughts and plans at 30 and 19 are very different. you dont know what position you will be in later. 2nd off, the company may not really care about the video specifically, but if you and another candidate are equal something "stupid" like this can be the tipping point. it may be "mild" but its just enough to make them think.... hmmm their judgment might not be as strong as the other candidates. when companies see other companies like Callaway golf make stupid marketing decisions like they did with their recent ad. it definitely makes them look at your social media to see the decisions you make. even down to what they share/repost/etc. and this may be "mild" or in a grey area, but it makes them think....hmmm, what else do they think is mild/acceptable.

My question is, as a collegiate team do they not have a media oversite or communications person who says what they can and can not post on an account with the school name attached. I work in D1 athletics and with all of our sports teams every social media post is done and posted by their media team. The athletes do not post themselves on the school accounts. Everything is monitored and edited before being put out to the public.

Tarleton literally has “digital dirt” when you’re in block. Your digital footprint is looked up and shown to the entire class. The ozark regions standard is low low.
