@caught.la: A fire hydrant erupted into the air after a hit-and-run crash near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, flooding a South Los Angeles intersection as firefighters struggled to shut off the rushing water. The collision happened around 2:30 AM Sunday at Hoover Street and Vernon Avenue, where a silver sedan and a newer-model black pickup truck crashed, leaving both vehicles heavily damaged. Multiple occupants reportedly abandoned the wreckage and fled the area on foot. The black pickup then crashed into Erica’s Market and 98 Cent Store on the corner, causing additional damage to the storefront. The impact also damaged the hydrant and sent a powerful column of water above the roadway and across the surrounding streets. LAFD crews responded and encountered significant difficulty accessing the underground hydrant shutoff valve. Firefighters could be seen repeatedly attempting to engage and turn the valve using a hydrant shutoff key, but the tool appeared to have difficulty catching onto the valve. Crews continued working at the access point as water poured from the broken hydrant and flooded the intersection. After multiple attempts, firefighters were eventually able to bring the flow under control. Despite the extensive damage, no major injuries were reported at the time of posting.
