Top 2 reasons I got into a top ranked PA program on my first application cycle (spoiler: it wasn’t because I was the smartest): 1. My military service; 2. I mentioned that I was rebuilding/modifying an old car and my interviewer was a car guy lol. He literally said “I’ve been wanting to hear about your car” 😂

My son was a D1 rower. Interviewers always asked about his rowing experience. I found this in an article about rowing: There’s nothing quite like the interdependency of rowing. There is no All-Star, and there’s no room for ego. You give up individualism. It is not easy to do for type A highly competitive individuals. I think I want to be known for my teamwork. I’ve developed a deep understanding of interdependence and teamwork through rowing, a perspective I will carry throughout my life. There are times I have had to set aside my ego and individualism for the sake of the boat. As a highly competitive person, I’ve learned to focus my energy on my team’s success rather than personal distinction. Through years of practice, discipline, and shared pressure, I now understand that true performance comes from trust and collective effort. They can handle feedback, criticism, losing, setbacks, adversity, and failure without quitting, making excuses, or blaming someone else. They know how to grind and are mentally tougher than non-athletes. College athletes are the single best employee pool. They have committed to something and have become excellent at it. They know how to show up and practice to get better. They understand teamwork, are competitive, and want to win. Only 5% of high school athletes earn an NCAA roster spot. It's not about scholarships, it's about roster spots. To earn one of the only 500,000 available out of 8 million high school athletes, you are already elite and a savage. They know time management, too.

I did horrible in school growing up. I knew at 11 years old, I wanted to be a doctor. Well, at 18 I was given a Gardasil vaccine. I got Transverse Myelitis at 18….. I was a professional stunt woman, obviously that career was short lived.

Hey go ahead and do bodybuilding too bc the level of self control it takes with your diet and training regimen, it’s insane. I know exactly what he means by saying marathons indicate a high level of dedication and perseverance

He has a point plus, you’d be surprised, many docs are runners, triathletes, and it’s a brother and sisterhood.

As someone who reviewed applications just personalize them. Say that you are applying to them specifically and why. It matters. Very few take the time and it will get you on the short list guaranteed
