Africa is home to some of the most impressive land animals on Earth, and rhinos are a perfect example of this ancient wildlife. These huge herbivores have lived in African and Asian ecosystems for millions of years, playing a crucial role in keeping grasslands healthy and clearing path ways for smaller species. Despite their thick skin and tough appearance, rhinos face massive threats today, making them one of the most protected groups of mammals on the planet. The rhino family includes five surviving species found across two continents, with each one adapting to a unique habitat. In Africa, you can find both the white rhino and the black rhino. The white rhino is the second largest land animal after the elephant and relies on a wide, flat mouth to graze on grass. Black rhinos are slightly smaller and have a hooked upper lip that helps them grab leaves and branches from tall bushes. In Asia, there are three lesser known species: the Indian rhino, the Javan rhino, and the Sumatran rhino. The Indian rhino is famous for its thick skin folds that look like body armor. Sumatran rhinos are the smallest of all and are actually covered in reddish hair, sharing a close evolutionary connection to the extinct woolly rhino. Meanwhile, the Javan rhino is currently one of the rarest animals on Earth, with less than eighty individuals left in a single Indonesian reserve. A lot of people get confused by the names white and black rhino because neither of them is actually white or black. Both species are gray, and their actual color usually depends on the soil or mud they roll in to protect their skin from parasites and the hot sun. The word white actually came from a mistranslation of the Dutch word wijd, which means wide, referring to the animal's broad mouth. Today, huge conservation projects are working around the clock to protect these animals from habitat loss and poaching for their horns. Since rhino horns are made entirely of keratin, which is the exact same material as human hair and nails, they have no real medical properties at all. Protecting all five species is essential for keeping our planet's natural ecosystems in balance. Which rhino species or African animal should we cover next?
