This is exactly why American tipping culture is broken. My dad and I once had a $500 lunch in New York—complete with insanely marked-up wine—and he left a $40 tip because the complicated bill wasn’t clear and, frankly, the waitress had been inattentive and had an attitude throughout. The manager then came over and confronted us about the amount, while the waitress stood glaring at us, which hardly made us feel inclined to reward her further. In the UK, staff are paid by their employer and a tip is an extra for genuinely good service. If a restaurant can charge $500 for lunch, it should pay its own staff properly—not shame customers into adding another $100 regardless of how they’ve been treated.

in days when i was travelling to usa i accepted had to tip. people fell over themselves for good tip. but it was fine. its clearly changed its levell!! in uk we do tip but if service bad or staff arrogant and sulky they dont get one. paid on merit not expected. but do appreciate there may not be minimum wage in usa? so its desperation

I've never been to America but seeing the way some of these waitresses talk online about it is bizarre, "If you can't afford to tip don't come" That's your job gone then luv if business drops massively because you're rude.
