If a company wants a high performer gone but doesn't want the lawsuit, the severance, or the messy optics, they rarely fire them. They make them leave on their own. I've sat close enough to these decisions to know exactly how it's run, and it almost always looks like this: 1️⃣ They start building a paper trail. Feedback that used to be a quick verbal note suddenly shows up in writing, documenting small things to justify a decision that's already been made. 2️⃣ They shrink your scope. Your best projects get handed to other people under the language of "bandwidth" or "development for the team," stripping you of the exact work that kept you visible. 3️⃣ They move the goalposts. Your targets shift, the criteria get vaguer, and somehow you can never quite land on "meeting expectations" no matter what you actually deliver. 4️⃣ They cut you out of the room. You stop getting invited to the meetings where things get decided, and you start hearing about changes after they've already happened. 5️⃣ They rewrite the story about you. The reviews that used to glow turn into "concerns," usually with no specifics you can actually push back on. 6️⃣ They isolate you from your allies. They signal to your peers that you're on the way out, and people start keeping their distance so it doesn't land on them too. 7️⃣ They make it unbearable enough that you quit. That's the entire point of the first six. If you resign, there's no severance, no claim, and nothing on them. They would always rather you walk than have to push you. If your stomach dropped reading that, hear me clearly. You're not imagining it and you're not suddenly bad at your job. This is a strategy, and the moment you can name it, you can protect yourself. Keep your own record, don't resign in a panic, get things in writing, and talk to someone who knows your rights before you make a single move. The people who come out of this intact are the ones who saw it for what it was early. #womenatwork #corporatelife
