Just to clarify that many airports/airlines do prefer to use ground power units while on the ground regardless of APU status & depending on the airport/airline, they may or may not have air conditioning available at each gate. The APU isn't just some random vent hole at the back of your plane, it's a whole additional engine running before your pilots ever touch the real ones. When it breaks, ground crews have to hook up an air start cart to get one engine going, then feed that engine's bleed air over to start the second one.
