Your parents unknowingly trained you to become emotionally avoidant. Every time you tried to express how you felt and were told you were “being disrespectful,” “talking back,” or “you’re just a kid, you don’t know what you’re talking about”… You learned that expressing yourself = conflict. So you started suppressing your emotions instead of communicating them. You stopped speaking up when something bothered you. You stopped questioning things that didn’t feel right. You learned to keep the peace instead of standing up for yourself. You became afraid of being misunderstood, rejected, or labeled as disrespectful. And now, as an adult, you might struggle to communicate your needs, set boundaries, express your beliefs, or even tell people when they’ve hurt you. The crazy part? Your parents may not have been intentionally trying to hurt you. They were often repeating the same patterns they learned growing up. But understanding where the pattern came from doesn’t mean you have to keep carrying it. You’re allowed to use your voice now. You’re allowed to disagree. You’re allowed to have boundaries. You’re allowed to express anger, sadness, discomfort, and vulnerability without feeling guilty for it. Healing isn’t just about forgiving your parents. Sometimes it’s about finally giving yourself permission to say what you weren’t allowed to say as a child. Your voice was never the problem. You were just taught to silence it.
