I think writing quality would increase from authors being able to criticize their peers, but since they share the same publishers/ literary agents I guess they aren’t allowed to 🤷♂️

Imagine how many more great books we could have if criticism wasn't conflated with hate. If people, authors and readers alike, weren't afraid to share honest, maybe brutal, opinions on works that miss their mark. Respectfully, of course.

i think about this all the time. writers are readers first. yet now it feels like i can't openly talk about books or other authors i dislike, because those authors are technically my "colleagues" now. which is such a strange, and frankly, stupid expectation of this industry. because why does becoming an author make my honesty as a reader suddenly feel hostile?

i see so much discourse online about how authors cannot ever negatively review or critique other authors good lord the book community is so sensitive I see dumb discourse every week. I wanna see beef that isn't "are books with bi woman allowed to call themselves sapphics?" i want REAL LITERARY CRITICISM. Also...bullying and cruelty still happens. Readers are so awful to authors.
