Medical gaslighting is now a documented research phenomenon. A 2024 study by Moss et al. surveyed 447 women with pelvic pain and found patients were routinely told to lose weight, drink alcohol, or pursue therapy as treatment for unexplained physical symptoms. A 2024 study by Kentrou et al. in eClinicalMedicine of 1,211 autistic adults found 31.7% of autistic women had been misdiagnosed with a psychiatric condition prior to autism diagnosis, most commonly personality disorders, anxiety, or mood disorders. Diagnostic delays for women’s health conditions average 7+ years for endometriosis and 4.5+ years for PCOS. These tactics work in many cases but every doctor and every situation is different.
