There’s a street in Lower Manhattan most New Yorkers walk right past Maiden Lane. Dutch settlers laid it in 1698 and called it Maagde Paatje, “maiden path,” because mothers and daughters used the brook alongside it to do laundry. By 1795, diamond merchants took over. Brides wanted their ring to come from Maiden Lane. In 1900, a ten-story tower went up at 14 Maiden Lane, built specifically for the diamond trade. einforced floors for vaults, oversized windows for grading stones. Over 300 jewelry firms packed into two blocks. I’m Darlene Liebman. I sell real estate here, so this history is the market I work in every day. By the 1920s, financial firms moved in, rents soared, and the jewelers left for what’s now the Diamond District on 47th Street. 14 Maiden Lane spent the next century as offices, then artist lofts, mostly forgotten. Until now. It’s just been converted into nine full-floor luxury residences. Step off your private elevator landing, and you’re already home, no hallways, no neighbors. Those same oversized windows now flood every residence with light. Original moldings and details remain, paired with Viking, Bosch, and Dacor appliances, Italian marble. Prices start around $2.6 million for roughly 1,300 square feet, a full floor with a private elevator in one of Lower Manhattan’s best addresses. DM me the word DIAMOND and I’ll personally arrange a private tour. Maiden Lane went from a Dutch footpath to the diamond capital of America to the heart of the financial world. Nothing disappears here, it just transforms. Follow for more NYC history. #NYCHistory #MaidenLane #NYCRealEstate #LowerManhattan #HistoricHomes
