🇬🇧 The most tragic event in Concorde’s history, and the one that ultimately sealed its fate, was the Paris crash on July 25, 2000. An Air France Concorde was scheduled to fly from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to New York when disaster struck during takeoff. Moments before departure, a piece of titanium debris had fallen onto the runway from a Continental Airlines DC-10. As the Concorde accelerated, one of its front tires struck the debris and burst. Shards from the disintegrating tire pierced the underside of the wing, rupturing a fuel tank and causing a massive fuel leak. The leaking fuel ignited, leading to an uncontrollable fire that quickly spread to one of the engines. The aircraft was unable to gain speed and altitude, and just minutes after takeoff, it crashed into a hotel in Gonesse, near Paris. All 100 passengers and 9 crew members aboard were killed, along with 4 people on the ground. Investigations later revealed long-standing vulnerabilities in Concorde’s design, particularly the extreme fragility of its tires and lack of tank protection. Following the crash, the fleet was grounded, and modifications were made, including reinforcing the fuel tanks with Kevlar and redesigning the tires. Despite these improvements, Concorde’s reputation never fully recovered. Combined with rising operating costs, maintenance challenges, and the decline in passenger demand after the September 11 attacks, the Paris crash accelerated Concorde’s retirement. In 2003, both Air France and British Airways permanently withdrew Concorde from service.
