DO NOT USE “JUDGE NOT” AS AN EXCUSE TO LIVE CONTRARY TO GOD’S WORD John 7:24 is one scripture that is often quoted without paying attention to the context Jesus said “Do not judge according to appearance but judge with righteous judgment” But what was happening before Jesus made this statement The people were questioning Him and accusing Him of being wrong and even questioning whether He was from God. Jesus was correcting their judgment and telling them not to judge based on human assumptions but to judge righteously So the instruction was not a license for sinners to say nobody should question the way they live Notice something very important The word used throughout the statement is judge The issue is not whether we should judge but how we should judge To judge righteously means to judge according to the standard of God and that standard is His Word We often say things like “Do not judge me by my appearance, look at my heart” But there is something we must understand Only God can perfectly examine the heart We cannot see another person’s heart but we can observe the fruit of their life This is why Jesus said “By their fruits you will know them” A believer’s life should give evidence of what is happening on the inside And this brings us to the appearance of a Christian The Bible does not teach that appearance is completely irrelevant In 1 Timothy 2:9 Paul speaks about modesty, decency and proper conduct in how believers present themselves Why Because Christianity is not only about what we claim to believe inwardly. The life we live outwardly should also reflect the One we claim to belong to There should be a visible distinction between light and darkness There should be something about the life of a believer that communicates that we do not belong to the world This does not mean that we should become judgmental, proud or condemning It means we should stop using “Do not judge” as a covering for disobedience We cannot say God looks at the heart while deliberately presenting an appearance that contradicts the values of the Word The outward life does not perfectly reveal the heart but it can give us evidence of what a person is intentionally displaying That is why Scripture says we should examine ourselves The question is not simply “Can someone judge me” The better question is “Does my life give people a righteous reason to recognize that I belong to Christ” Grace is not an excuse to look like the world Freedom is not permission to abandon godly standards And “judge not” was never given to protect a lifestyle that contradicts the Word of God We must learn to read Scripture in context and allow the whole counsel of God to correct us Judge righteously Live modestly Walk decently Represent Christ visibly
