Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) lived a life that seemed almost as dramatic as his novels. Born in Moscow, he began as a writer fascinated by poverty, suffering, and the hidden struggles of ordinary people. In 1849, his life changed forever. Arrested for joining a literary discussion group, Dostoevsky was sentenced to death.
