Pikeville is made up of hard working coal mining families, just like most of SE KY. I’m from Knox County. KY. No matter where you go in SE KY if you are driving by people’s homes and you don’t belong in that neighborhood, we’re going to stare at you! We protect our homes and neighbors. However, had you stopped and asked for directions instead of driving in circles making assumptions about people you don’t know, you would have been treated with kindness and probably offered a cold drink. Kentucky has enough stereotypes without adding fuel to the fire. I’ve never encountered a rude person in all my visits to Pikeville. In every city there are good and bad people. But, you DIDN’T speak to them. You chose to speak poorly about people and make accusations that aren’t warranted. FYI, just because people were looking at strangers driving by their homes doesn’t mean they were going to eat you. They were probably wondering why these idiots keep driving by. Please consider removing your post or at least redo it and not make it seem you were treated badly.

It’s honestly a shame to see you label Pikeville as “awful,” “weird,” and “freaky” based on getting lost, driving up a holler, and having people look at you. You were driving into an area where people know the vehicles, faces, and families that regularly come through. When an unfamiliar person keeps driving farther into a holler, of course people are going to notice and wonder who you are and what you’re doing there. That isn’t automatically hostility or people being “creepy.” You were simply an unfamiliar face in a close-knit, rural community. That’s a very different environment from driving down a main road where nobody thinks twice about unfamiliar traffic. And calling the people you passed “The Hills Have Eyes” was especially unnecessary. Yes, there are people in these communities who live in poverty. But poverty doesn’t make someone frightening, ignorant, or less human, and it certainly doesn’t justify reducing an entire group of people to a horror-movie stereotype. What really stood out to me wasn’t that you had an uncomfortable experience. You’re allowed to feel uncomfortable when you’re lost somewhere unfamiliar. It’s the way you immediately interpreted the people around you and turned their curiosity into something sinister. The fact that your takeaway was to stereotype the people you encountered says a lot more about how you chose to perceive that experience than it does about Pikeville or the people who live here.

I travel to Pikeville about every weekend. I have never met people who remind me of these hills have eyes. Never felt like I was going to be eaten. I’ve never had a bad experience. Sad you would say such things.

All of the things you said about how you feel about the people, places, and the "freaky things" you witnessed. Yet there are multiple chain hotels in the area and even a local hotel in downtown Pikeville that are all acceptable places to stay for a person who was feeling uneasy about the area...yet y'all went to the Alpike motel? It just don't track lol. I grew up there and have been gone 30 years. I can see where the GPS probably had issues up in the hollows, which why would anyone even take a motorcycle up one of those roads if you're unfamiliar with it and had no destination. The main road is US 23, a major highway. Along the stretch, through Pikeville and around, there are restaurants, shopping, banks.. anything you'd need as a tourist.. There ARE some hillbilly looking people for sure. Ironically, when I first started this video, I thought you looked like someone from Pikeville. I didn't have any negativity attached to the observation, just the observation that you seemed like the people from home. Maybe food for thought. 😳

An unfamiliar car or motorcycle driving around in high dollar or exclusive communities would react the same way. It’s unfair to disrespect people for natural curiosity.
