The whole point of discipline is to TEACH our kids the underlying skills they are missing, and traditional punishment doesn’t do that. It simply aims to deter a child from doing something again without giving them any positive replacement behavior that they can do instead, so it’s very ineffective long-term since there’s no actual skill building happening. I only use natural or logical consequences with my children that are directly connected to their misbehaviors & it works so well to truly change both their outward behavior & inward thought processes. My oldest child who I almost 6 is now so familiar with the types of consequences that I give that she can help me come up with them. When she’s misbehaving, I’m able to sit with her & discuss what she did wrong & what her logical consequence should be. Doing this helps her truly LEARN the moral lessons that I’m trying to teach because it shifts the responsibility to herself instead of her becoming resentful toward me for whatever punishment I decide to give her.
