There's a new employee in my workplace. They don't know how to type using a keyboard. They can't write using pen & paper (they hold a pen like a 5 yo holding a Crayola marker and it's physically painful for them to write). And they don't type questions in search bars on their phone (they only use vocal). I don't understand how thar person graduated. It's not just tech-knowledge. It's everything and it's terrifying.

Yeah, my company is just burning tokens. We are on contract to fix some shitty finance app and no one knows what’s going on but me. I’m actively trying to find a new job, so good luck to them when I leave.

my dad was in computers sonce the 70s, and 80s, he was working for IBM at in the 80s and 90s, he now work as a consultant in a fiber optic/commercial internet company, charging over 80$ a hour, because the new guys don't know how to work the various physical technologies and the programs, the man is a boomer in his late 70s. if he retires they are basically doomed

It's even worse than that. Machine output is poisoning potential training sets. The greater the adoption, the worse the poisoning becomes. Models will be harder to train and more unstable.

I manage a lot of young entry level employees. It’s the loss of knowledge. But even more the loss of the desire/confidence/drive to figure things out. If a problem exceeds the very low difficulty bar that been established. Many people will simply not attempt, not look, not ask. They will just abandon or not attempt something at all. EVEN at the their own job, at the expense of them and their families.

This is what killed the AI coding tools for me. I tried using prompt-only techniques to fix things and what inevitably happens is they create more issues and, often, break things that weren’t broken before and are unrelated to the problem. Then I moved to using them for a framework. But the frameworks aren’t planned and thought out, even with very detailed prompts, and it takes more time, effort, and energy to actually fix the problems that it hides in that framework than it does to code the whole thing from scratch yourself. Plus, it is polluting useful tools like stackexchange in the process and making useful information harder and harder to find.

And we'd already started to lose the knowledge of how to do basic computer stuff before AI was being used en mass. Making tech more consumer friendly just meant simplifying it. How many genZ/Alpha do you think dont know how to save a document because everything is done in the cloud? What about file locations and management? How many do you think dont know how to use a mouse!? All this, what used to be basic pc 101 knowledge, is being lost because of how easy tech is to use today.

My lead asked me why I don’t use AI to write my queries since I have a corporate license.. I told them because I know how to do it myself. Every time I use AI to write code I spend time debugging it. I learn by well by debugging. I will not use AI to do something I already know how to do.

We're shifting from an era of needing to know things to an era of needing to know how to retrieve knowledge... but that leaves us back to shadows on the cave wall and entirely reliant on the oppressive, exploitive class for the "knowledge" they allow us to have / convince is us reality.

Dude even before Gen AI, a lot of younger people in my country Indonesia have difficulties typing on a keyboard for work because they're only used to do all the stuff on smartphone and iPad. We will have more people don't know about analog tech

we've seen it before. by the 70s Polynesian wayfinding was nearly extinct. through luck, the people who built hokulea found 1 person who still knew how to wayfind. he taught a new generation (through significant pressure) and now they are on their 3rd or 4th generation of wayfinders. if that one person said no, a core cultural knowledge of Polynesia would have been lost. even in the west, there are things that are barely 100 years old that archaeologists just don't know and have to experiment to find the "most likely possibility"
