@candlesan01: Running a good playtest is an essential skill for a game designer. Even in an age of automated testing, and formal testing methodologies, you will inevitably run your own tests whether it's trying out a small idea on a co-worker or having your whole team try out a new feature. Learning to truly listen to playtest feedback is a humbling process every game designer should experience firsthand on a regular basis or risk losing touch with the player experience. The game seen in the video is a game jam I did back in 2017 you can play it here https://www.wyattcheng.com/games/Bamboo/index.html Here is the full playtest script you can steal. "Thank you for agreeing to playtest my game. Before we get started I want to emphasize we are testing the game, not you. There's no wrong way to play, and nothing you do can be a mistake. Think out loud if you can. If you get stuck, I'm not going to help, and that's on purpose. I want to see what you'd do with zero help from me, because that's exactly what a real player will get." In addition it can be helpful to prompt players to think out loud. "While you play, it would be helpful if you narrate out your thought process out loud. If you go silent for a stretch I may prompt you and ask what you're thinking. This does not mean you are doing anything wrong, I just want to know what you're thinking" #gamedesign

"Millions of people who are going to play your game for real", sure 😐. Four people played my game, and just because I asked them to and we were friends...

My play testing is always localized so I mark down every question asked and go back and rework something to answer it in game. What was the question, WHEN did they ask it, and I ask them when they first felt unsure what to do/what inputs do etc. great video as always.

This is why Valve famously used to put their grandparents and complete non-gamers in front of their games during testing. They weren't expecting them to figure out how to play, but they didn't know what was supposed to be obvious or had good context for game design vocabulary, so they gave extremely sensitive feedback about clear signposting. Your grandma won't finish a level, but if she goes in the right direction because of how you light the level to draw her attention, that means someone who does know how to play an FPS will also just "know" where to go as well.

dont use someone that Playtests a lot of games or is a proficient gamer.
honestly a grandma is a better tester then anyone else.
if you want to know if the clues are clear enough, old people will tell. ✌️

Thoughts on the forever team making up new sky elves with no lore instead of giving the community high elves like people have clamoring for, for like 20+ years? 😅

I work in a completely different industry (banking software) and it’s cool to see the UXR approach is exactly the same in game dev

Yeah, I released the Early Access too early before the tutorial level was added, 3 players give me feedback, only 1 figured it all out
.
every dev should just assume your players won't know anything

Just fyi I have my own e-commerce company, and I'm stealing this script for my website design when I share with friends/family/colleagues! Obviously with swaps (Eg "buyer" versus "player")

I had the honor of play testing for an 1 man indy company. I literally wrote down my thoughts after each session. what i liked. what I didnt like. what questions I had about mechanics, story and what i would like to see in the future. the solo developer was really appreciative. and even if he doesnt like my ideas it was a lot of fun.
