Replying to @louandherchildren People with a specific variant of the COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase) gene may experience negative effects when taking quercetin due to the way their bodies process certain compounds. The COMT gene plays a crucial role in the breakdown of neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. It is involved in the methylation process, which adds a methyl group to these neurotransmitters, facilitating their breakdown and removal from the body. When people with low COMT activity take quercetin, a flavonoid commonly found in foods like onions, apples, and tea, they may experience negative side effects. ❗Quercetin has been shown to inhibit the COMT enzyme, which can exacerbate the already slow breakdown of neurotransmitters in those with low COMT activity. This results in a build-up of dopamine and other catecholamines in the brain, which can lead to symptoms like anxiety, agitation, restlessness, irritability, or even feelings of being overwhelmed. 👉🏻This can also be due to increasing histamine levels in the brain which also contribute to anxiety. Other things you can try to support histamine breakdown/ mast cell stabalization - Houttuynia Supreme - PEA - Palmitoylethanolamide - Baking soda in water 🙋🏼‍♀️ if you're looking for more support with histamine intolerance, you can book a consult as I am currently accepting new clients Let me know if you have more questions!
