Stage IV breast cancer doesn’t always look the way people expect it to. 🎀 I was diagnosed de novo Stage IV metastatic breast cancer at age 31. (Hormone positive) ER+/PR+, HER2-, with limited metastatic disease. Despite being Stage IV, my oncology team is treating me aggressively with curative intent and the goal of reaching NED (no evidence of disease). I am so lucky. This post explains why my situation is a little different, and why it is not a one-size-fits-all diagnosis every time. I know how fortunate I am to have these treatment options. 🤍 When I tell people I have stage IV cancer AND that my doctors are treating me aggressively with curative intent, I’m usually met with some confusion. And honestly it makes total sense. Those are two things we don’t usually hear in the same sentence. According to National Cancer Institute (NCI) and its SEER database and statistics from 2024, the chances of being diagnosed with my exact breast cancer are extremely rare. The way my doctor explained it to me: if you put 2,000 women with a breast cancer diagnosis, ages 30-35 in one giant room… statistically ONLY 1 of us would have a Stage IV De Novo Olgiometastatic, Hormone Positive (ER+/PR+, HER2-) diagnosis.😳 NOBODY can promise me anything. This could possibly come back, not respond to treatment as planned, and many other scary things. But I hold on tight to every piece of hope and positivity through this. 💕 No matter what, I know this life is precious, short, and fragile. It is well worth fighting for. Every single second on this earth with my son, husband, and family is a gift.
