Not only is it disappointing but to make matters worse after a few months in the role your new boss criticises you for not picking things up quickly enough. As shown in this video our natural reaction is to defend ourselves highlighting that we haven’t been set up to succeed. Which is all true. Poor onboarding is associated with low morale, high turnover, low confidence, low productivity the list goes on. The risk with this is that the manager will hear this as an excuse especially if they are not willing to admit your onboarding has been poor. If you’re faced with this situation I would recommend highlighting your concerns in the package of a solution as shown on this video. State that you have struggled to work to your normal standards and the reasons why and propose what you think would help you. You can’t change the past, but this approach helps you take some control of what happens next.
