@explainingourpast: What looks like an ordinary stretch of the Paluxy River in Glen Rose, Texas is actually a record of dinosaurs walking here more than 110 million years ago. At Dinosaur Valley State Park, dinosaur tracks are preserved in the limestone riverbed—where dinosaurs crossed muddy tidal flats along the edge of an ancient sea during the Cretaceous Period. The large sauropod tracks are believed to have been made by Sauroposeidon, the official Texas state dinosaur. The smaller, three-toed theropod tracks are believed to have been made by Acrocanthosaurus. But the tracks are only part of the story... The geology explains why they survived. Calcium carbonate from marine life helped form the limey mud that covered these ancient tidal flats. When dinosaurs walked across it, their feet pressed into the soft sediment. Those impressions were later buried and preserved as the sediments became limestone. Today, the Paluxy River cuts through those ancient layers, exposing some of the dinosaur trackways once again. #dinosaurs #texas #geology
