@supersonicani: I love and welcome internet advice but there can also be a lot of misconceptions #fiberart #knitting #crochet #knit #craft

I do both and find in general, in groups where I meet both; knitters are more condescending about crochet than vice versa

i really don't like how people (esp crocheter) are portraying knitters as snobby and not willing to help others etc 🙄 and i don't get why orienting beginners towards certain tools is regarded SO BADLY... bc many new knitters might look at patterns online and not know that they are made in the round and impossible to make with straight needles

In my experience, you have to find your knitting bestie and just ask them for help, not the entire internet.

On the topic of yarn costs: I think because knitting is generally more for wearables there is a bigger emphasis on natural fibers that feel better on the skin, which is more expensive. Like I'm absolutely okay with using lower cost acrylic yarn for knitting decorative objects. I just don't make those things as often as crocheters.

I do both! I do think there is a bit of nuance missing here when we talk about “all the supplies you need to knit” and when I started I was frustrated by that. I think crochet is very accessible for beginners, because if you buy one 5.0 mm hook, you’re good on 5.0 mm hooks for life. However when a knitting pattern ask for a 5.0 mm needle, the next question becomes “what cord length? 16 inches? 24? 48? All three!?!” And you do, actually, have to get each separately and it does actually matter. The problem comes in when people insist you must get the spendy option, there are totally sets that are inexpensive and accessible, but the sheer number of things I needed to learn to knit successfully astounded me at first.

Knitting is more expensive i feel due to 01. marketing 02. Wearables using natural fibers - more versatility. Crochet can be even more expensive if the crocheter decides to go with 100% natural yarn because it uses more meters/yardage. I live in Germany and switched to Knitting because its cheaper to make garments using quality yarn which i really wanted to use (like cashmere)

To be honest, I find knitting to be very different from crochet and any time I ask for help from a knitter, I get the "don't worry,. knitting is easy, you'll get it" and that just makes me not want to do it. When I ask for help with a crochet project, there are at least 5 people that will jump with ideas, explanations, alternative ways to do it, so on and so forth...

My first time knitting I used scrap acrylic yarn and two metal yarn needles lol and I’d like interchangeable needles one day but I’m quite happy with my circular ones for now 🤭

you really don’t need fancy materials, i learnt with plastic straight needles form kmart and acrylic yarn. unfortunately the knit space loves to tell brand new knitters to buy the most expensive materials when it’s just entirely unnecessary

Yes, upgrade later and there is no knitting police. Strong suggestion: do not knit when: your tired, angry, sleepy, hungry, or frustrated.

Let’s be real, the interchangeable knitting needle set has to be at least 200 and you need 2, minimum 😂 I will say though working with wool for the first time has made me appreciate how awesome it is for winter stuff like scarves and hats, although I am always on the hunt for the sub 50 dollar skeins 😂

I kinda learned both at the same time. I feel the knitting reality outside of online is a lot more open. I agree upgrade when you need and get the yarn you have the most access to.😅😅😅

Any craft, fiber or otherwise, can get expensive and fast, if you let it. Knitting can be accomplished and successfully with nearly any budget. Keep an open mind that everyone has opinions and there will always be someone who doesn't like how you knit, your needle selection, you yarn choices (fiber content and or colors). Ignore them. You do what interests you and use whatever tools and fiber/ uarn types and colors you want to. You tube has so many tutorials and social platforms have many groups that are helpful. As with learning anything, it will take time and you will get out of it what you put into it.
