@kingof00128: REMEMBER me ❤️ we miss you so much Dad 💜❤️ 🕊️ The Life and Death of Lucky Dube — A Legend Who Never Truly Died Lucky Philip Dube was born on 3 August 1964 near Ermelo in what is now Mpumalanga, South Africa. He became one of Africa's most influential reggae musicians and one of South Africa's biggest-selling reggae artists. From a young age, Lucky experienced hardship. His mother, Sarah, struggled to provide for the family, and Lucky was partly raised by his grandmother. His mother considered his birth a blessing after previous difficulties having children, which helped inspire the name “Lucky.” 🎵 His journey into music Lucky did not begin his career as a reggae musician. He initially performed mbaqanga, a South African style of music rooted in Zulu musical traditions. He began recording in the early 1980s before turning toward reggae in the mid-1980s. Inspired by musicians such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff, Lucky discovered that reggae could give him a powerful way to speak about apartheid, inequality, poverty, injustice, peace and the struggles of ordinary people. His first reggae album, Rastas Never Die, was released in the 1980s and faced censorship under the apartheid government because of its political message. Rather than remaining silent, Lucky continued using his music to speak for people who were suffering. Over a career of roughly 25 years, he recorded 22 albums in languages including Zulu, English and Afrikaans. His music eventually reached audiences throughout Africa and around the world. 🌍 The message in his music Lucky Dube's music was much more than entertainment. His songs spoke about love, family, poverty, discrimination, apartheid, crime, war, African identity and hope. His ability to combine reggae with South African musical influences gave him a distinctive sound. He became internationally respected as an artist who used his voice to encourage people to think about society and to stand for peace and human dignity. 💔 The tragic night of 18 October 2007 On 18 October 2007, Lucky Dube's life was tragically cut short. He was 43 years old when he was killed in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, during what authorities described as an attempted hijacking/carjacking. South African President Thabo Mbeki publicly expressed his condolences to Dube's family and described the killing as a tragic example of the country's violent crime problem. News of his death shocked South Africa and the rest of Africa. Fans, musicians, political leaders and ordinary people mourned the loss of a man whose music had touched millions. His death was particularly painful because he was not killed on a stage or in a dangerous performance. His life was taken in an act of violent crime while he was simply going about his life. 🕯️ His funeral and farewell Thousands of people gathered to mourn Lucky Dube. His memorial service in Johannesburg brought together fans, musicians and public figures who remembered him as an extraordinary performer and a powerful voice for Africa. He was later buried at his family farm near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal. His funeral became a major moment of mourning for South Africa and the wider African music community. ❤️ Lucky Dube's legacy Lucky Dube died in 2007, but his music did not die with him. His songs continue to be played by radio stations, DJs, musicians and fans around the world. New generations continue to discover his music and the messages contained in his lyrics. He showed that a musician could entertain people while also speaking about serious problems facing society. He used reggae as a bridge between South Africa and the wider world. Lucky Dube's story is therefore not only a story about death. It is a story about hope, courage, music, family, Africa and the power of one person's voice. 🕊️ Rest in peace, Lucky Dube 3 August 1964 – 18 October 2007 You may have left this world at only 43, but your voice remains. Your body was laid to rest, but your music continues to travel from generation to generation.
