Both species are gray, and their actual color usually depends on the soil or mud they roll in to protect their skin from parasites and the hot sun. The word white actually came from a mistranslation of the Dutch word wijd, which means wide, referring to the animal's broad mouth. Today, huge conservation projects are working around the clock to protect these animals from habitat loss and poaching for their horns. Since rhino horns are made entirely of keratin, which is the exact same material as human hair and nails, they have no real medical properties at all.
