It really doesn’t make sense to me how as social workers we advocate for others yet we don’t have a union for ourselves. How can we start one? This is an injustice that I can’t ignore!

It’s designed to keep marginalized people out of the field that’s supposed to advocate for marginalized people. Tbh, this is why we end up with numerous therapist and no very little people on the macro or mezzo levels.

Did MSW advanced standing. 7 classes all in person, 24hr/week internship & I still worked 40hrs/week in order to pay my bills. It was horrible

Yes please! I have to leave my professional current job due to having to have to do an UNPAID internship. Plus my current job will not allow me to do anything less than 30 hours a weeks. I have to do a minimum of 16 hours a week for my unpaid practicum. I now have to look for a part time job because I cannot pay my bills. It should not be like this!

I wasn’t MSW but I was rehab counseling and had to do practicum and internship. FREE INTERNSHIPS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL

Exactly. They should be paying you for your work. Mind you these unpaid internships are billing insurance companies and/or Medicare for y’all’s services.

for everyone saying you’re not licensed yet during my internship I split the client load w the actual social worker and did half her work every day. That was the internship.

There is a union! At least for medical social workers. But you can’t unionize if you’re not a paid employee

Like all degrees in the humanities, particularly those at the post grad level, nursing, pastoral care, dentistry, law, school medical school, etc, there is an element of training out of the classroom. Typically these are unpaid because it’s a class. It’s not a job. The problem is that there is an explosion of profit centered entities who make their students find their own placements. Those placements tend to be terrible and can be exploitive, but they are definitely unpaid. This is why choosing a good MSW program really matters because that’s where the tuition is affordable, and you’re much more likely to have a paid internship that is offering excellent clinical training.

yes it is terrible, i was working full time, while have in person classes 2 days a week all day then doing my internship within the job but still needed to do my regular paid duties. ended up having a mini stroke and dropped out but i just started and i will finish in a year at my new school. i pray it gets better!!!

I felt this sooooooo much! Im a mom, work 2 jobs, in advanced standing & doing internship. I do internship 2 10hr days, work 64-80hrs a week besides that. Idk, I cook the night before for my kids, I pack lunches and laundry between 11p-3am, I facetime my kids to say goodnight some nights its all worth it graduating in May....

I got licensed with my MSW in the state of Ohio. Was prepared to sit for individual licensure in Ohio. decided to move to Michigan over the summer and now I'm back to needing 4,000 hours and another exam.... I practiced in Ohio for over two years... I can currently see one type of insurance with my limited license..... Insane

Imagine doing it as a BSW 😅 that’s what I’m living through currently. Three days at my internship three days of class. And I had the audacity to miss one of my seminar classes and have to write an essay about the stuff I missed from the class. And I’m working part time overnight! Plus we’re all preparing for masters applications so everyone has to do a million clubs to look good for the msw that we still don’t get funding for. 😭 the worst system I’ve ever heard of. Because I’m not even guaranteed a job after my BSW!!

I'm in my last year and what has saved me was working at a behavioral health hospital for my full-time job. I get paid for my internship. Yes I do 5/12s (sometimes 13) but it feels worth it.

You should look into the group Payment 4 Placements. They’re trying to advocate for MSW students to receive payment for internship.

If you’re unhappy drop the program. This may not be the field for you. All graduate programs are the same. And has been sustainable given the amount of interested applicants.
