@roseinhistory: In 1972, the Rothschilds hosted one of the most extravagant and bizarre parties of the 20th century: a surrealist ball at Château de Ferrières in France. Guests arrived in elaborate masks and costumes, entered through a maze described as a “hellish portal,” and found tables covered with bizarre surrealist decorations. Fur covered plates, strange dolls, unusual food and surreal sculptures turned the entire dinner into something that looked more like an art installation than a party. The highlight was dessert: a sugar sculpture of a woman lying in a bed of roses. The entire evening was inspired by the surrealist movement, which aimed to challenge reality and blur the line between dreams and the real world.
