You can do plenty of inner work when you are single. But there are some emotional wounds that are only healed relationally. This is called a corrective experience. You go through a situation that brings up a painful memory, but this time you’re in a safe environment, and you receive a healthy, unexpected response that heals something old. It works by giving you evidence of a new reality. My client has ADHD and she stims, a vocal stim, a phrase she repeats to regulate herself. In 2020 during lockdown she was stuck in the same place as her long-term partner, and she could tell by his body language it irritated him. She asked if she should stop. He said no. Weeks later he snapped and told her he needed to put a muzzle on her so she’d finally stop. She acted like she didn’t care and felt completely crushed. Six years later she was on vacation with a man she’d been dating for about a year. He sent her into his phone to airdrop the photos they’d taken by the pier, and she found an album called Cutie Stims. A handful of short videos, or her stimming and doing quirky things. All the old shame came up and she asked herself if he was holding it against her. She had carried that shame straight into a relationship that never gave her a reason to. When she confronted him he told her he loves that she does those things, and that on site the nights get so quiet he starts to miss her, so when he’s getting ready for bed he plays one of the videos because it feels like she’s there. He had no idea how much that healed in her. She’d told him she had ADHD, but never what happened with her ex. Some healing only happens inside the right relationship, and sometimes it looks just like this. Have you experienced anything like this? If so, leave your story below. Keywords: corrective experience, healing in a secure relationship, when a man loves you, a man in love, dating advice for women, relationship psychology, neurodivergent dating, ADHD relationships, healthy relationship signs, feeling safe with a partner #datingadviceforwomen #relationships #womensdatingadvice #datingforwomen #HealingJourney
