🚨 Handling dodgy behaviour👇 When someone behaves in a way that essentially throws us under the bus and then denies it when we confront them about it, we can be left feeling powerless. Especially if they say things like we’re confused, or we’re misinterpreting things or we’re not remembering it right (when we know we are). It can be very disorienting and upsetting. It’s one thing to remember something differently to someone else but quite another when someone lies and then makes out our interpretation/ reaction is the problem. This is called gaslighting. Understandably our natural instinct is to argue with them and try to make them validate what we know happened. The truth is this is unlikely to get us anywhere. Someone who behaves in this sort of way is unlikely to suddenly see sense and validate your experience. Therefore there is no point arguing with them as it will just send you down a black hole you don’t want to go down. Practice responding calmly for example: “I remember what happened clearly which is why I’m trying to get to the bottom of why incorrect information was shared” If they continue along the same lines the best thing to do is disengage by saying something like: “Given we have a different recollection of things there seems to be little point in continuing to discuss this. Let’s leave it there” Remove yourself as soon as you can from unhealthy dynamics like this and seek advice from someone more senior/ someone you can trust. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. You’ve got this 💪 💬 Leave a 🙌 in the comments if you found this helpful 👀 💾 Save this for when you might need it ✈️ Share with someone who this could help 🚀 Follow for more tips on handling tricky situations at work #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #communicationskills #difficultconversations #difficultpeople #boundaries #assertivecommunication
