@daydreaming.about.data: We don’t close reading gaps by lowering expectations. We close them by building the knowledge and skills students need to succeed. That means starting with what students know and intentionally building from there. This year, we’ve started with the foundational pieces: • Closed syllables • Open syllables • Consonant + le syllables • Schwa • Soft c and g • Vowel teams • -s, -es, -ed, and -ing As students build that knowledge, I can increase the complexity of the reading and spelling work. And when the work gets harder, I don’t simply hand students a harder task and expect them to figure it out. I teach it. I model it. We practice it together. I review what they already know and connect it to the new concept. Then I gradually release more responsibility to the students. That progression matters. If we want students to become stronger readers and spellers, we have to keep building their knowledge and giving them opportunities to apply it. Next up: morphology. And I can’t wait to see where they take it. #teacher #readingteacher #readingintervention #3rdgradeteachers #teacherlife
