The expectation of respect and personal safety cannot be a one-way street. Political connections do not confer authority, nor does a former career in law enforcement grant a lifetime entitlement to it. A badge once held is not authority indefinitely possessed. These encounters raise the same concerns about respect for public dissent and community voices that our committee has repeatedly brought forward. Public office is a responsibility to the people, not a privilege extended to an inner circle.
