I didn’t always hate being home alone at night while my family was on vacation. Usually, I actually liked it. The house was quiet. I could stay up late, order food, watch movies, and nobody bothered me. But that changed one night. My family had been gone for four days, and I was sitting downstairs watching TV around midnight. I heard the front door handle move. At first, I thought it was the wind. Then I heard the lock click. I muted the TV. Someone slowly opened the front door. I froze. I grabbed my phone and quietly walked toward the stairs. Then I heard footsteps. Someone was inside my house. I ran upstairs and hid in my closet. I called my mom. No answer. I called my dad. Then he walked straight toward my bed. He pulled the blankets back. Nobody was there. He stood there for a few seconds. Then he whispered, “I know you’re here.” I almost screamed. He searched the room. Then he left. I waited until I couldn’t hear his footsteps anymore. I grabbed my phone and called 911. The operator told me to stay hidden. I whispered that my family was away on vacation. There was a long pause. Then the operator asked, “Your family is away?” “Yes.” She sounded confused. “How many people are supposed to be in the house with you?” I told her nobody. She said, “Then why did someone call us from inside your house ten minutes ago?” My blood went cold. I checked my phone. There was no call history. Then I heard footsteps again. But this time they were coming from downstairs. The police arrived a few minutes later. They searched the entire house. No one was there. The front door was still locked. The windows were locked too. They told me maybe someone had gotten inside and escaped before they arrived. I didn’t believe them. Then one officer came upstairs holding my phone. He asked me where I had been hiding.
