@renzutv: There’s this old YouTube video of a kid named Eli playing Half-Life 2: Episode Two that has become one of those pieces of gaming nostalgia that hits differently when you know what happened afterward. He’s just sitting there playing the game, completely immersed in the story, and when he reaches the end, he asks something so innocent: “I wonder what’s gonna happen on the next one.” And honestly, why wouldn’t he think there was going to be a next one? Episode Two was literally part of an episodic series, so the idea that another chapter would come out felt completely normal. But then he finds out there is no next episode, and you can see how genuinely upset he gets. At the time, he probably had no idea that he was experiencing something that Half-Life fans would still be talking about years later. Episode Two ended on one of the biggest cliffhangers in gaming, and then Valve never released Episode Three. Years went by, and that “next one” everyone expected just never came. That’s what makes Eli’s reaction so funny and sad at the same time. He wasn’t making some deep statement about the future of the series—he was just a kid who wanted to know what happened next. And unfortunately, that’s exactly what the rest of us ended up wondering too. Every year, fans kept hoping for news, rumors would start again, and people would joke about waiting for Half-Life 3, while that cliffhanger from Episode Two remained unresolved. Looking back at Eli’s video now feels like watching a snapshot of a time when nobody knew that the wait would become this long. He thought the next episode was coming. We all did.
