What a huge gift it is for me to be chosen by so many animals - the gift that pours into my heart and rips it wide open all the same. Rescuing animals and being their guardian is a devastatingly rewarding position. Zuna found me one month before moving to CR. She was being kicked around on the street and when I called for her- she ran right into my arms. I remember that feeling like it was yesterday. I knew she was my other dog Torch who had transcended years prior. I knew it with all of my being and still 7 years later- I call her Torch- it just slips right out. Torch came to me when I was actively attempting to end my life. I was 17. She healed me- she gave me purpose to live. She returned, as they do, when I needed her most. Into a 4 month old discarded pure bred blue nose Pit bull. And just like that- a month later she’s flying to Costa Rica. Torch and I had big dreams of living in a house by the sea. Torch endured some of my absolute hardest years. I knew she would return when I got my shit sorted out- when she could enjoy life autonomously and not only absorbing and transmuting my pain. Zuna lives a full life with freedom to roam and be wild like a dog should be. I’ve done my best to honor her sovereignty whilst doing my best to keep her safe. As our agreement states with the law of human and canine. Even though I do my best- she still escaped with her sister and I believe it was those 3 nights in the jungle where they met an animal with the Neospora parasite. I’m still awaiting blood test results to prove this theory. Fucking Costa Rica- nothing here happens quickly. The patience required to live here especially under these circumstances- is why gringos leave. Pura Vida isn’t just a beach slang - it’s raw reality. Pure Life means to accept the natural rhythm- it means to be in flow state- to honor the life & death of the jungle environment. It means to fully accept everything in the present moment. Not worrying about the “future” or stressed about the “past” Just existing right here right now. This life is the complete opposite of the reptilian program living inside every civilian. Everyday I die so I can embody this life.
