In 2022, a review of every large study found no clear proof that serotonin is missing: not in the blood, not in the brain. And one paradox breaks the model on its own: the most-used antidepressants plug the pump that collects serotonin within hours, but improvement comes in weeks. If you fill a tank and the car takes a month to start, the problem was never the tank. What they really do is put the brain in a state where it can change again.
