In relationships, a lot of people think they’re listening because they’re quiet while the other person talks. But listening isn’t enough if it doesn’t lead to change. Something I see all the time in therapy is one person explaining their needs over and over, hoping their partner will understand. And the partner might say “you’re right” or promise to do better. But then nothing changes. No new behavior. No real effort. Just temporary reassurance followed by the same patterns. Eventually, the person asking for more starts to feel like they’re repeating themselves just to be ignored. And over time, that starts to wear them down. They stop bringing things up. They stop hoping it will be different. Not because they don’t care anymore, but because it hurts too much to keep asking. This is why communication and comprehension are not the same thing. You can say everything perfectly, but if your partner doesn’t take it in, apply it, and reflect it in their actions, the relationship doesn’t grow. If your partner tells you something matters to them, treat it like it matters to the relationship. Even if it feels small to you. You don’t have to get it perfect. But you do have to show effort. If both of you are willing to try, sit down and make a plan together. What does change actually look like in your day to day? What can each of you commit to? Maybe it’s checking in once a week. Maybe it’s one intentional gesture a day. Maybe it’s planning time to reconnect. Real effort is specific. It’s consistent. And it shows your partner they’re not asking for too much.
