@mothershipsg: UMNO, a political party in Malaysia, has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign “to help ease the burden” on former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, the party's president said in a statement. Under Najib's conditional pardon granted by Malaysia's king, he will be allowed to serve the remainder of his jail term at home if he pays the RM50 million (S$15 million) fine. In a Facebook post on Sep. 19, UMNO's secretary-general said they had raised RM634,562.02 (S$198,000) within its first 3 hours. But the donation drive has been met with mixed reactions, with a member of the Democratic Action Party likening it to asking villagers to help pay a fine for misusing their money. Najib was jailed in 2022 after being found guilty of multiple charges, including abuse of power and money laundering such as the transfer of RM42 million from state funds into his personal bank accounts.
