Countries such as Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Finland, Romania, and Hungary were drawn into the immense conflict, while the Soviet Union fought across the Eastern Front. Europe’s wars also reached far beyond the continent, involving powers such as the United States and Canada, while Mexico contributed to the Allied effort. After 1945, Europe entered a new era dominated by the Cold War, divided between competing powers and ideologies. Yet despite its violent history, Europe gradually moved toward cooperation, integration, and peace.
