A cheap bottle of wine, a side dish, or even simply the promise to help with dishes after are all perfectly acceptable gifts in terms of etiquette. I think it depends on the kind of etiquette bc there's a big difference between being respectful and kind to others and the rules that actually are arbitrary and have nothing to do with respecting others. its also very culturally dependent as different cultures have different rules of etiquette, yet some people like to look down on people of other cultures because they dont necessarily know or follow the same rules of etiquette

And ppl are taught to switch their cup/fork if they are around someone who is lefthanded with them, i cannot eat without holding the fork on my right hand and the knife on my left hand and that is something ppl excuse a lot since it’s very common

I was always taught to never show up empty handed! And a gift could be the recipe for your grandmas famous chocolate cake, or the hosts favorite artists newest cd (showing my age), or a new cozy blanket because it’s almost winter. It doesn’t have to be expensive. You could make the cake! Or give them your copy of the cd. It’s all about your heart and intentions.
