One detail in the footage makes the scene even more haunting: Meron recognizes that some of the belongings belonged to Eritreans. A pair of shoes carries the words “Qeyih Bahri” — Tigrinya for “Red Sea.” Imagine walking through a desert and finding the belongings of people who may never have made it out.
