Director Nagisa Ōshima initially approached him purely to act in the film alongside David Bowie. Sakamoto, who had never acted before, agreed on one strict, bold condition:

Ōshima immediately accepted. • ​The Traditional Instrument Illusion: The track famously captures a deeply haunting, traditional Asian sonic atmosphere. However, there is not a single traditional acoustic instrument used in the recording. Sakamoto created that iconic, bell-like wine glass texture entirely through early Japanese digital synthesizers (like the Prophet-5 and the Fairlight CMI sampler), trying to create a sound that belonged to no specific country. • ​The "Indonesian" Gamalan Hook: To get that unique, percussive acoustic texture for the main melody, Sakamoto heavily sampled the sounds of a Gamelan (a traditional Indonesian ensemble instrument made of metallophones and gongs). He electronically layered and manipulated the hits to sound both futuristic and deeply ancient. • ​The David Bowie Rule: Even though David Bowie was the main star of the movie and one of the biggest pop icons of 1983, he and Sakamoto strictly agreed not to collaborate musically on the soundtrack.
