Most people seriously underestimate how hard it is to build a trading system that actually survives. A good-looking backtest is easy. A robust system is not. The real work is everything underneath: avoiding look-ahead bias, avoiding overfitting, testing out-of-sample, checking parameter sensitivity, validating across different assets, and making sure you didn’t just discover random noise. That’s before you even automate execution. I’ve had dozens of developers reach out, and even among people who can code, very few understand how deep this actually goes. That’s why I don’t try to do everything myself. My role is understanding the theory, the portfolio, the research questions, and partnering with people who are exceptional at building the infrastructure. The goal isn’t to create a backtest that looks amazing. It’s to build something with a chance of surviving contact with the real market. That is much harder.
