it's 100% the game but some of it also has to do with the chronology the games came out in. Like if c4 came out after c1 it would definitely have a better reputation. not because of nostalgia but because the collabs, season ideas, maps and gamemodes have just gotten repitive now. On the other side tho I do think it is the game as before c2s5 the game stuck to its origins more and was less collabs and more ACTUAL fornite, like I enjoyed c2 more then C3 even tho none of my friends played until c3s1. (C3 is still peak tho)

As a child, I can confirm it was the game. I started when I was like 9 or 10 in chapter 2 ssn 5. It was so so good until chapter 4. Chapter 4 is when Fortnite got shit. They come out with a couple good ssns but it’s just so ass now as a 14 yr old.
